The Gift of Music

Some of you may be aware of a program The V-Knights wanted to start with the idea of giving the gift of music in the way of an acoustic guitar to kids that were going through tough times. As the official band for The Phoenix Children’s Hospital, they’ve had the opportunity to take a tour of the hospital and see how some of these kids live on a day to day basis. They’ve performed for numerous benefit concerts to raise money for kids that are battling cancer, some as young as two or three years old.

Earlier this year after performing at a benefit concert, some kids came up to the stage and asked Christian for his guitar pick. He passed out a few. On the way home from the event Gabriel, Christian, Alex, and Nicolas came up with the idea to hand out candy after a show. Not just any candy, one that would inspire kids to learn music. After months of planning, the first packages of V-Knights Guitar Strings candy arrived in October! Not only would they be used to hand out to kids but would serve for fund raising purposes. We had no idea that the guitar strings would be a hit! Most recently, we’ve had a lot of request and people are using them as stocking stuffers for Christmas.

On Sunday, Dec 19, we received a request that would change a boys life. The request came in an email as follows:

“I am looking for an inexpensive used acoustic guitar for a young man who is in a wheel chair and blind. Do you know anyone selling one?

This is a young man who wants the guitar is 23, he lives in a group home because his family can’t care for him.  He sits alone in his room for hours and is limited in every way possible. One of the things I have discovered about this young man is that he LOVES music! He will sing to me for hours! As he sings, he always strums his collar! He’s limited physically with his fingers so would never be able to play actual songs, but he loves the sound of music so much! He would love to be able to simply strum the chords and hear the sound they make. That’s why I need to find him a guitar. It doesn’t matter the condition, if it’s tuned or even has all the strings. I’m just trying to give to this young man a small piece of something that makes him happy. He is sooo sweet. I can’t imagine a life in darkness in a wheelchair. When I think of him strumming, I see it as one of the few things he could actively do. It would bring him tremendous joy!
And why he loves music? Well it’s all he has, he lives in a world of darkness.
You’ll find me one won’t you!!! :-) )) -Lisa.”

Because of your donations and support for The V-Knights we were able to present a brand new acoustic guitar to Joey yesterday morning, Dec 21, and perform a mini concert for the staff and people that live in the group home.  It was a real tear jerker. We asked Joey if he wanted to play a song with The V-Knights and he could not believe he was going to actually play with a band. We played our song One Day and to our surprise Joey started singing lyrics to the song and everyone started clapping and cheering!!  It was awesome! He loves the blues too!!

Thank you for supporting The V-Knights and helping us reach out to our community!! You Rock!!

“One Day” is an original composition by The V-Knights. It was composed for a benefit concert for a fellow musician in April 2010. The title signifies that it only takes One Day for people to come together and change a persons life forever.”
